DESCRIPTION:‘Ruins and Monuments’ Exhibition – 1st Aug – 31st October\nMines and Mining Landscapes of Devon and Cornwall \n1st August – 31st October 2026\nTavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre \nAs part of Tavistock’s programme of events marking the 20th anniversary of the town’s inclusion within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site\, Tavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre is proud to present ‘Ruins and Monuments’\, an exhibition of mine photographs and paintings. \nThe exhibition forms part of a wider project that aims to visit former mining heartlands across the South West\, celebrating their rich industrial heritage and distinctive landscapes. \nPhotographer Graham Warren has built up a diverse collection of mining images using a variety of cameras\, including a traditional pinhole camera – a camera without a lens. Some of the equipment he uses is not far removed from the photographic technology available at the height of mining during the mid to late 19th century. The distinctive qualities of pinhole photography are particularly well suited to capturing the stark beauty and atmosphere of the mining remains. These evocative black and white images form the backbone of the exhibition. \nArtist Duncan Rice uses drawings and sketches as the starting point for his paintings of mining landscapes. A landscape designer by profession\, Duncan has a keen interest in the impact of mining on the landscape and how nature has gradually transformed these industrial remains into places of remarkable beauty and historical significance. \nThe exhibition will be on display in the Robing Room at Tavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre from 1st August to 31st October 2026. Admission is free\, and visitors are welcome during the Guildhall’s normal opening hours.

Other churches and chapels which served the community at various times have disappeared from the streetscape. Its current date was set in 1752 following the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. \nOne of only three goose fairs in the UK—alongside Nottingham Goose Fair and Michaelmas Goose Fayre in Colyford—Tavistock’s event remains deeply connected to its heritage. The name “Goose Fair” is thought to originate from the tradition of buying geese at the fair to fatten up for Christmas.  \nWhile the fair has evolved over time\, it still retains its market roots. Traders line Abbey Bridge and Plymouth Road\, selling everything from handcrafted goods to delicious local produce. Meanwhile\, the town centre is transformed with over 200 stalls\, including community groups showcasing their work. \nFor those seeking thrills\, the Wharf and Bedford car parks host an exhilarating funfair\, with 70 spaces allocated to the Showman’s Guild for high-adrenaline rides and traditional fairground attractions. Visitors can enjoy white-knuckle rides like the Freak Out\, classic Waltzers\, and Dodgems\, as well as fun houses filled with twists and turns. Younger visitors can delight in giant inflatable slides\, carousels\, and helter-skelters. \nBeyond the rides\, the fair offers a variety of side shows\, where visitors can try their luck at winning prizes or simply soak up the lively atmosphere. With its unique mix of history\, tradition\, and entertainment\, Tavistock Goose Fair remains a highlight of the year\, offering something for everyone.
