DESCRIPTION:Described by some historians as the wealthiest abbey in the Southwest\, Tavistock Abbey acted as a religious and administrative centre to the region for some 578 years. Its links to the monarchy gave its abbots powers which were not always well used and its unusual layout has yet to be fully understood. This walk\, with Sue Spackman\, explores the abbey’s remains and what we know about its history. A flat walk of approx 90 minutes covering less than 1 mile in length in the heart of Tavistock town. \nThe walk commences at 2pm from outside the Tavistock Visitor Information Centre in Guildhall Square and lasts for 90 minutes. \nTickets are £5 per person

DESCRIPTION:The five wharves at the head of Tavistock Canal are\, today\, largely hidden from public view\, but in the early nineteenth century they were major sites of activity for transporting minerals\, ores and goods from the town to the River Tamar at Morwellham\, and bringing essential supplies back to the town.
