It's been a wet winter so we are thrilled to see signs of Spring here in Tavistock. Easter is a time of such joy and hope - the Devon hedgerows are bursting into life, Easter eggs are on the shelves and school is out! It’s one of the best seasons to spend time here on the edge of Dartmoor.


Here are our top picks of things to do in and around Tavistock this Easter.


Tavistock Easter Trail

Tavistock Town Centre always puts on great trails and there is something a little different for adventurers this Easter. Not many people know that Tavistock holds UNESCO World Heritage Status. Pretty crazy for a little market town in the heart of Devon! We invite you on a journey to visit other historical sites around the world and find out how they celebrate Easter. Pick up some sweet treats as you go.

The best bit… it’s FREE to take part!



Dates: 30th March - 13th April (not Sundays or Easter Monday)

Location: Tavistock Town Centre – collect trail sheets from Guildhall Visitor Information Centre; Roots & Vines on West Street or The Bedford Hotel. Estimated duration is 2 hours but there are plenty of places to stop for a hot chocolate on the way.

Times: 10am-4pm.

Cost: It’s FREE!

Tavistock Pannier Market | Easter Trail

Pop into the market on Good Friday and Easter Saturday for a mini-trail. Check out all the traders in their Easter Bonnets on Easter Saturday!

Dates: 29th & 30th March.

Location: Tavistock Pannier Market.

Times: 9am-4pm.

Cost: It's FREE!

 

Tavistock Museum | Grand Re-Opening This Easter marks the much anticipated re-opening of the town's Museum. Come along to see the brand new displays and to take part in some activities including Easter Bonnet and Colouring competitions.


Date: 30th March.

Location: Tavistock Museum, Court Gate.

Times: 11am-3pm. The judging of the Bonnets will take place from 12noon.

Cost: It's FREE!

 

Museum of Policing in Devon & Cornwall | Easter Opening

Opening times have been announced for the mini-museum in Tavistock. Visitors keens to see what is inside the museum in Tavistock's Court Gate Building can pop in at certain times over the Easter holidays.


Dates: Saturday 30th March, Friday 5th April & Friday 12th April.

Location: Museum of Policing in Devon & Cornwall, Court Gate.

Times: 11am-3pm.

Cost: It's FREE!



 

Tavistock Library | Easter Activities

The Library will have a host of events for all ages on throughout the Easter holiday. Most are free and drop-in with no need to book. A Libro's Friends trail will be on offer daily for younger children.

Location: Tavistock Library, The Quay, Tavistock PL19 8AB.

Tavistock Guildhall | Victorian Crafts

The Discovery Team will be holding a family drop-in activity session in the Guildhall Courtroom on a theme of Victorian crafts including flower pressing, decoupage and fan making.


Date: Wednesday 10th April.

Location: Tavistock Guildhall Gateway Centre, PL19 0FW

Times: 10am-1pm.

Cost: It's FREE but a donation of £1 per child is suggested.

 

Tavistock Heritage Trust | Walking Tours



While in Tavistock, a walking tour is a fantastic and fun way of learning more about our beautiful, World Heritage town. Run by the Tavistock Heritage Trust, from April to October, they cover a variety of topics so there is something for everyone.

Meet at Tavistock Guildhall Gateway Centre for 2pm.


Date: Monday 1st April. The canal is one of the longer tours that will suit those who enjoy a walk beside water, passing notable spots like the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake whilst keeping an eye out for our resident kingfisher.


Date: Saturday 6th April.

Explore Tavistock's past with the engaging Heritage Introduction Tour, offering an overview of our fascinating 1,000-year-old World Heritage Town.


Date: Saturday 13th April. The Tavistock Abbey tour visits the remnants of the Abbey and its history as one of the wealthiest Abbeys in the southwest, as well as being the religious and administrative centre to the region for nearly 600 years.

Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centres | Easter Eggventure

Leave the Easter chocolate behind, dust off the winter cobwebs and take yourself off for a self-guided egg-venture. We've designed some walks so you can go off on your own egg-themed adventure. Making use of our award-winning Miles Without Stiles routes, you simply follow an easy access trail and enjoy some fun challenges along the way. Just ask staff in our National Park Visitor Centres for a map and off you go!


Dates: 30th March – 14th April.

Location: National Park Visitor Centres at Princetown, Postbridge and Haytor.

Times: 10:00-16:00

Cost: Free!

 


The Garden House | Easter Trail

Get ready for some ‘eggsploring’ around the beautiful Garden House. Collect your trail pack from Visitor Reception and find the clues hidden all around the gardens. Pack includes free cookie from our cafe on completion of the trail! Enter the colouring competition to win an egg!


Dates: 29th March – 14th April.

Location: The Garden House, Buckland Monachorum, Yelverton, Devon PL20 7LQ. Times: Trail open during normal visiting hours - 10.30am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm).

Cost: Normal admission applies (members have free entry and includes up to 3 children or grandchildren for free). Pack costs £3.50 – goodies, trail map, colouring sheet crayons and more!
