  • Walking Tour – Tavistock’s Wharves

    The five wharves at the head of Tavistock Canal are, today, largely hidden from public view, but in the early nineteenth century they were major sites of activity for transporting minerals, ores and goods from the town to the River Tamar at Morwellham, and bringing essential supplies back to the town. Join Stephen Docksey on this short, flat walk, lasting approximately 2 hours, which visits all five wharves and is based on archaeological and historical studies by Robert Waterhouse, which were published in 2017. The walk commences at 2pm from outside the Tavistock Visitor Information Centre in Guildhall Square and lasts for 90 minutes. Tickets are £5 per person

    Described by some historians as the wealthiest abbey in the Southwest, Tavistock Abbey acted as a religious and administrative centre to the region for some 578 years. Its links to the monarchy gave its abbots powers which were not always well used and its unusual layout has yet to be fully understood. This walk, with Sue Spackman, explores the abbey's remains and what we know about its history. A flat walk of approx 90 minutes covering less than 1 mile in length in the heart of Tavistock town. The walk commences at 2pm from outside the Tavistock Visitor Information Centre in Guildhall Square and lasts for 90 minutes. Tickets are £5 per person

    Ever since the first occupation of Tavistock there was and is a requirement for the provision of water for consumption, industrial use and for disposal of waste. Join Sharon Gedye on this town walk which explores the sites of historic water courses and their various placement within the town via wells, leats, conduits and pipes and how water was stored and distributed for use as drinking water, for mills an breweries etc and eventual use for disposal via a managed sewerage system.     This flat walk, with Paul Blowey, along the entire accessible route of the picturesque Tavistock Canal, from its source at Abbey Weir around 2.5 miles to Lumburn, where the canal originally branched off to the slate quarry at Mill Hill. En-route we will discover the role of the canal in developing the prosperity of Tavistock in the 19th century. We will also pass the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, and may even spot the resident kingfisher! This walk will take about 3 hours and is approximately 5 miles long. Part of this walk is on open ground. Please wear suitable footwear and be prepared for inclement weather.
