Tavistock Goose Fair is a much-loved annual event held on the second Wednesday of October. Its current date was set in 1752 following the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. One of only three goose fairs in the UK—alongside Nottingham Goose Fair and Michaelmas Goose Fayre in Colyford—Tavistock’s event remains deeply connected to its heritage. The name “Goose Fair” is thought to originate from the tradition of buying geese at the fair to fatten up for Christmas. While the fair has evolved over time, it still retains its market roots. Traders line Abbey Bridge and Plymouth Road, selling everything from handcrafted goods to delicious local produce. Meanwhile, the town centre is transformed with over 200 stalls, including community groups showcasing their work. For those seeking thrills, the Wharf and Bedford car parks host an exhilarating funfair, with 70 spaces allocated to the Showman’s Guild for high-adrenaline rides and traditional fairground attractions.
