Tamar Trails

Where will the trails lead you? Explore them on bike or foot, try some outdoor activities or relax at the Tamar Trails Centre.  There are 25 km of dedicated off-road mountain biking trails to entice families and committed bikers alike. You can enjoy activities like Tree Surfing, Canoeing or Archery. The trails are free to use and open all year round. There is a parking fee of £2 for the day, and free after 6pm. Website

Route 27

This long distance route running from Plymouth to Ilfracombe in North Devon passes right through Tavistock. Parts of it use old railway tracks and others quiet country lanes. It takes in the famous Tarka Trail from Meeth northwards and provides cyclists with the most stunning views of rolling farmland, moorland and river estuaries, all packed with wildlife and fascinating flora and fauna. The Granite Way

This is a truly spectacular and mostly traffic free cycle route through rural Devon with fantastic views of Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside.The eleven mile multi-use trail is also part of the National Cycle Network Route 27. Starting just north of Tavistock at Lydford, it is mostly built along the course of the former Southern Region railway line, running through beautiful countryside with fantastic views of the western tors of Dartmoor. Drake’s Trail

This is part of the National Cycle Network Route 27 and runs 21 miles southwards to Plymouth, much of the trail using the old railway track between Tavistock and the city. The trail crosses open moorland, snakes through steep wooded valleys and takes in Grenofen Tunnel, built by the famous Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It also crosses Gem Bridge, the stunning new crossing over the River Walkham. There are opportunities for refreshments near the tunnel and at Yelverton. Website

The Dartmoor Way

Tavistock is a major start and stop point on this beautiful circular route around the perimeter of Dartmoor National park, which links hamlets, villages and towns along its length. ​You can choose to cycle north towards Okehampton via Lydford, a trip of some 21 miles.
